On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• demonstrate a clear grasp of alternative accounts of change and continuity in welfare states, particularly since the 1970s.
• critically engage with scholarly debates on crisis, retrenchment and welfare state reform in a comparative perspective
• Show an understanding of the influence of Europeanisation and globalisation on welfare states
• demonstrate a critical understanding of arguments related to demographic and labour market developments as they relate to welfare states
• outline wider social changes including social movements and ideological shifts in public poolicy as they impinge on welfare states
