This module aims to provide a comprehensive and critical analysis of mental health policy in Ireland. The module addresses the evolution of mental health policies, assessing the implications for contemporary polices and strategies. In conjunction with this, there will be international comparisons drawn to other countries approaches to mental health. Key stakeholders from the field will contribute to the teaching and learning experience for students. Focusing on aspects of contemporary mental health policy, some notable topics that will be explored include the following:
• The contentious nature of ‘mental health’ and 'mental illness' • The stigma and social exclusion of people labelled as ‘mentally ill’ • The issues faced by both users and providers of mental health services. • The challenges involved in delivering a recovery-oriented agenda from policy to practice
