Module POLITICAL ECONOMY

Module code: SO602A
Credits: 10
Semester: 2
Department: SOCIOLOGY
International: No
Overview Overview

The starting point of this module is that economic action is embedded within social structures and, therefore, that economic development may take different forms depending on the social context and political forces that shape it. The module explores the Irish experience of economic development, through comparisons with other advanced capitalist and newly industrializing countries. In analysing these comparative cases, we examine topics such as: historical patterns of economic development; explanations of growth and inequality across countries; recent changes in the economy, including globalization, financialisation, and the growth of an information economy; the role of the state, labour and households in shaping economic development; how markets work and the sources of the contemporary financial and economic crisis.
