This course introduces students to the core ideas and skills associated with scientific research and communication of scientific information. It aims to equip students with tools required to find and evaluate scientific data, write technical reports and present scientific information effectively to different audiences in various formats, to include poster and slide presentation.
The main issues dealt with in this module will be: • Finding and assessing scientific information • Standards of evidence in science and how this varies between disciplines. Sources of evidence • Understanding and quantifying uncertainty • Presentation of data • Formal reporting
Another key component of this module will be an introduction to writing of structured documents, including effective use of tabular and graphical forms of data presentation. Team working skills will also be introduced and developed throughout the semester.
