A considerable part of the extant literature of medieval Ireland is dedicated to learned matter, that is, to subjects that could be termed academic or scientific in modern understanding. These subjects include grammar and the philosophy of language, biblical exegesis, geography, astronomy, history, law and legal commentary, and poetic composition. In this module, select examples of texts treating these topics will be read, critically analysed and evaluated in their literary and historical context.
