The development of ‘Celtic’ society during the Iron Age in Europe is introduced with the principal focus being on archaeological evidence, but important historical sources and linguistic studies are also explored. The conflicting explanations for the origins of the Irish in Ireland is examined, special attention given to sites such as Emain Macha (Navan Fort) and Tara, and the phenomenon of ritual human sacrifice. The early history of the Celtic languages is sketched, and important names from early medieval Irish literature are introduced.
