Module RETURN TO LEARNING - SOCIOLOGY

Module code: RL1C
Credits: 5
Semester: Year-Long
Department: ADULT EDUCATION
International: No
Overview Overview

In this module, Sociology will be used to encourage students to think critically about how they as individuals, fit into the ‘bigger picture’ of society. By developing what sociologists call ‘the sociological imagination’ students will begin to recognise that their personal biographies (life-stories) are the result of historical and social forces which can either enhance or limit their life chances.

In this module students will learn that many of the problems that people are faced with have social roots and are shared by many others. These roots, are often embedded in the structure and culture of society itself and as such, they cannot be solved by the individual alone. However, on the other hand, by learning not to take the world at face value and by critically analysing why and how society is as it is, students may begin to acquire the tools that are necessary to transform both themselves and the world in which they live.
