This module examines the origin of metaphysics in Greek thought and how it developed throughout the Middle Ages and into the early modern period. Some attention will be paid to the rediscovery of metaphysics in the twentieth century by such thinkers as Heidegger and Wittgenstein. The module considers the connections between metaphysics and aesthetics, tracing the development of philosophies of art and beauty over time and concluding with a consideration of contemporary philosophical debate concerning aesthetic theory.
