This module will look at migration in the context of the Irish language. It will consider movement within Ireland from Gaeltacht regions, paying particular attention to the foundation of the Ráth Cairn Gaeltacht community in Co. Meath, and to the impact of migration on life on the Great Blasket Island. Migration overseas has also been a significant factor in the Irish language story, and Irish-language literature will be used, in translation, as a source of information and insight into emigration in the post-famine period. Consideration will also be given to the cultural importance of the networks created by those who travelled abroad, as attempts were made by many to keep the Irish language and culture alive.
