The supervised research and submission of a thesis (c15,000 words), providing the opportunity for detailed independent research and study of a topic to an
advanced level. Regular individual tutorials are held with an assigned supervisor until the middle of June. Students will give one presentation of their research lasting 10 minutes in duration as part of the Department of Music Research Colloquia Series (in Semester 2). A draft of the thesis should be submitted to the supervisor by mid-June (so that the student receives constructive feedback by late June). Supervision (in person, by email, etc.) ends in late June. The completed thesis must be submitted online(no hard copy) by 31 August.

Module objectives:
- To develop a research project at master’s level
- To cultivate the student’s ability to problematize a research topic and to think critically
- To refine the student’s writing and organizational abilities
- To reinforce the student’s capacity to work independently
- To allow the student to present their research ideas in a supportive research
community
- To facilitate the student’s wider engagement with music research both nationally and
internationally

Learning outcomes: On successful completion of the module, students should be able to
(i) identify a suitable topic for research
(ii) present one paper on the subject of their research
(iii) compile an up-to-date bibliography and present examples using Sibelius
(iv) write a successful master’s dissertation with a suitable critical/analytical content for
masters’ level.
