• A survey of the development of popular music in the USA and UK in the twentieth century, considered in relation to its broader social and cultural contexts.
• An introduction to key issues and concepts about popular music.
• The module will consider the production, reception, and culture of popular music, as well as 'the music itself’.
• A focus of the module will be on the critical evaluation of significant styles and recordings.
• A core section of the module will focus on developments in rock music in the twentieth century, although other forms of popular music will be included.
• The module aims to develop a musicological approach to popular music.
