On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

appraise key concepts in current ideas of reception history.

assess changes in the reception history of two leading nineteenth-century composers.

understand concepts of sublimity, including ideas that connect the sublime to music in this period.

demonstrate a preliminary understanding of music’s relationship to other arts at this time, in particular literature, theatre and the visual arts.

recognise the role of the public sphere, publishing, and/or music writing, in the work of the composers studied.
