This module will be an overview of some of the major musical forms, techniques and styles cultivated in the Baroque and Classical Eras to the beginnings of early Romanticism. Students will be able to write critically about music.

Topics covered: The development of vocal and instrumental music from the mid-seventeenth to early nineteenth centuries; the suite; the concerto; the invention of opera; the da capo aria; oratorio, the string quartet; the symphony; the classical concerto; art song.
