	Overview
	This module consists of the following: 1) An Introduction to the study of music at university. Students investigate practical research skills (including library and reference skills), explore writing and listening techniques and learn about the disciplines and practices associated with the study of music. 2) The study and personal application of musical notation. 3) Participation in an approved departmental ensemble, and either solo performance (First Study) or group piano tuition.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: demonstrate familiarity with the various disciplines of music understand issues of style and structure in music recognise and discuss a range of music genres and traditions analyse tonal music notate and recognise harmonic progressions using different clefs.

Assessment

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	Continuous assessment marks are carried forward to the autumn The Group Piano Tuition Test can only be repeated during the Supplemental Examination Period in August under very exceptional circumstances. These circumstances must be approved by Dr Cascelli and Prof. Morris and must be fully documented. The Department�s decision on such applications is final.

	Pre-Requisites
	To qualify for First Study individual lessons: successful audition (week 1 semester 1) demonstrating Grade 6 standard in approved instrument/voice
