On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
-
define and distinguish the concepts of thermal equilibrium, temperature, heat, energy and entropy
-
calculate or estimate equilibrium and transport properties of ideal gases from a particle model
-
determine the heat exchanged and work performed in a variety of thermal processes
-
state the laws of thermodynamics and discuss some of their macroscopic implications, for example for heat engines
-
calculate thermal averages using the Boltzmann distribution
-
derive the equipartition theorem for the energy and apply it to solids and gases
