Module EXPLORING THE POWER OF LANGUAGE PART 1

Module code: ML161
Credits: 7.5
Semester: 1
Department: SCHOOL OF MODERN LANGUAGES
International: Yes
Coordinator: Dr Clive Earls (GERMAN)
Overview Overview

This module introduces students to the structure of language and its influence on the key aspects of human life: Thinking, communicating, constructing ideas, working together, controlling the self. Approaches to understanding language from multiple disciplines will first be considered, before focusing on the structure of language, in particular the structure of words, grammar, word order, sounds, language in its social context, language and creating meaning etc. On this basis, students will then identify, evaluate and practise their own conscious and unconscious skills of language use and determine their individual strategies for efficiently learning and using language for purposes of applying metalinguistic awareness in their subjective thought and intersubjective communication. In particular, the processes of constructing coherent and persuasive arguments in speaking and writing with acute awareness of how to use language in the process will be developed, resulting in a high degree of clarity in communication. Thus the module combines elements of language analysis with elements of enhanced language use for academic and personal purposes.
