Module BUSINESS RESEARCH PROJECT

Module code: MI674
Credits: 30
Semester: Year-Long
Department: BUSINESS
International: No
Overview Overview

The Business Research Project has dual interconnected processes and objectives. For students, this is an opportunity to research a theme in greater depth and apply the concepts and skills learned from both your research and your 60 credits of taught modules to a real organisation in practice. For organisations that provide projects, it is an opportunity for them to have a problem or question thoroughly and rigorously investigated and to receive feedback on the findings and conclusions.

Students will identify a research question, review the literature to identify knowledge and best practices that can be applied to this question, develop a research methodology, analyse findings, and make recommendations. Typically, students work in pairs with a host organization although assessment is on an individual basis.

To meet these objectives students will write a Business Research Project dissertation that explores the business practice and academic problem that is embedded in the research question. They will work with a faculty mentor to guide them on the academic research journey. A key aspect of this learning process is working with the organisation that has provided the project. This will involve the student using their communication and business skills to negotiate with the client, guided by the School of Business. There are three key outputs of this Business Research Project: a written BRP dissertation, a demonstrated client engagement process over the project, and a presentation and/or management report that provides the host organisation with a clear analysis and set of recommendations that can be implemented.

Typically, the host organisation is obtained by the School of Business for full-time students. Part-time students will normally work individually on projects associated with their own organisations. Part-time students can alternatively be assigned a project organisation by the School of Business.
