Module code: MI674
Credits: 30
Semester: Year-Long
Department: BUSINESS
International: No
Overview Overview

The Business Research Project has dual interconnected processes and objectives achieved through intensive research and engagement with a client organisation. For students, this is an opportunity to take what has been learned in the 60 credits of taught modules and research a theme in greater depth applying the concepts and skills learned from your research to a real organisation in practice. Students will undertake a process including identifying a research question, conducting a review of the literature to evaluate knowledge and best practices that can be applied to an exploration of this question, establish a research method to explore this question in business practice, and analyses of findings and a set of recommendations. Typically, students work with a client project organization throughout the process. For organisations that provide projects, it is an opportunity for them to have a problem or question thoroughly and rigorously investigated and to receive a student report on the findings and conclusions.

To meet these objectives students will write a Business Research Project document that explores the business practice and academic problem that is embedded in the research question. They will work with a faculty mentor to guide them on the academic research journey. A key aspect of this learning process is working with the organisation that has provided the project. This will involve the student using their communication and business skills to negotiate with the client, guided by the school of Business, on a project that they have the skills to deliver an outcome for. Using their communication and business skills they will research the project problems, working with the client on recommended solutions. There are three key outputs of this Business Research Project: a written academic dissertation, a demonstrated client engagement process over the project, and a presentation and/or report that provides the client with a clear analysis and set of recommendations that can be implemented.

Typically, the client organisation is obtained by the School of Business for full-time students. Part-time students will normally work individually on projects associated with their own organisations. Part-time students can alternatively be assigned a project organisation by the School of Business.
