Module code: MC606
Credits: 10
Semester: 1
Department: KENNEDY INSTITUTE
International: No
Overview Overview

This module enables a deepening and further development of learning in the field of mediation. It aims to develop a strong value base to guide mediation practice through the examination of the value base of mediation. Students debate ethical issues in class. Building trust between the mediator and the parties, trust development and trust repair between the parties, and the means of developing an empowering and recognising relationship for the parties with each other is also the teaching focus of this module. The dynamics and management of apology and forgiveness in mediation are taught. This module also teaches the principles and purpose of engagement in conflict intervention practice through the exploration of the theory and value base of Transformative & Problem Solving Mediation. Coached mediation role-play and feedback, experiential exercises, discussion and class reflection enable the application of theory to practice. Students also engage in Practice Consultancy and explore a mediation practice case. Students learn that reflective practice and mindfulness in mediation begins with being present, creating formulations, developing and using questions; learning how the parties view the conflict and their involvement; analyzing, evaluating and reforming hypothesis. Students learn that the information from clients directs the mediator's thinking and intervention approach both in conflict coaching and mediation practice. Methods of reflective practice are taught in order that students learn from mediation practice while identifying personal values and beliefs and becoming aware of how these influence practice.
