This module provides students with an overview of international legal history from the mid 1800s-late 1900s. It looks at the administration and structure of empires and their interaction with public international law to understand the period in question. Drawing on case studies from different jurisdictions, it looks at the ways in which law shaped the relationship between citizen and state, considering the various ways in which different legal structures and systems operated. It will look at these structures from both above and below to understand how law was understood both by those administering these systems, as well as those who were directly subject to it.
