The module will provide students with a systematic understanding of the role and action of the EU in the global context. It explores the core principles of EU external relations law, including EU competence, loyal cooperation and the effect of international law in the EU legal system. The course will interrogate the relationship between European integration and the development of the external action of the EU, and examine the divergent perspectives on the EU stand-alone identity vis-à-vis the international legal order through selected case study.
Topics covered include:
1. Systemic evolution and nature of EU external competence
2. The relationship between EU law and International law
3. Common Commercial Policy
4. The EU and the WTO
5. Human Rights policy
6. EU development policy
7. EU cultural and research policy
8. Fundamentals of the Common foreign and Security Policy

This course will be taught only if a sufficient number of students enrol. Any aspect of this module may be changed in any given academic year, subject to the discretion of the module lecturer.
