Module WORLD TRADE LAW

Module code: LW636
Credits: 10
Semester: 1
Department: LAW
International: Yes
Overview Overview

This module will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the central issues and debates in the field of international trade law. The course will introduce the student to the legal system governing international trade, particularly through the international agreements, structures and functions of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the primary international organisation in the sphere of economic globalisation. In analysing the treaties, jurisprudence, legal principles and rules of international trade, the course will also necessarily interrogate the dominant theories that underpin the world trading system, and will critically examine the alleged spin-offs of development, poverty reduction, innovation and employment. We will examine the divergent perspectives held by participants in the international trading system, and the underlying ideological and geopolitical contestations at play.
