Module code: LW469
Credits: 10
Semester: 2
Department: LAW
International: Yes
Overview Overview

This module examines the role of law within the medical context, considering issues at the interface of law, medicine and ethics. It highlights ethical dilemmas which medical practitioners, lawyers and policy makers face and explores how law can/should respond to such scenarios. It will examine contemporary challenges posed to medical law by e.g. emerging technologies and societal changes. We will consider how the law should respond to these developments, the limitations of law in such respects, and divergence which can arise across national frameworks on such issues.
A range of topics will be explored, including for example: the role of ethics in medical law, autonomy and consent in medical decision-making, and contemporary challenges such as those related to assisted dying and reproductive medicine.

Any aspect of this module may be changed in any given academic year, subject to the discretion of the module lecturer.
