Overview Overview

Please note:
We will admit students to this module only with the express permission of an academic staff member in the Department of Law who agrees to act as sponsor and supervisor. Entry onto this module is by invitation only (following a selection process).

Overview:
The purpose of this module is to build relevant data gathering and writing skills by completing research on a topic of legal relevance with practical applications.

The mode of entry to this module is as follows:
- One or more academic staff member(s) may put forward a research proposal for which students will be invited to apply. In appropriate cases, an external body such as a charity or non-profit body may pose a research question, and ask an academic staff member to supervise a student in addressing that question.

In all cases, it is at the discretion of the academic staff member(s) to determine whether to supervise an applied research exercise, and whether to permit a particular applicant to take this module. The Department also reserves the right to decline to entertain any proposal.
Formal entry and registration on this module is by invitation only (students cannot automatically enrol and will need to be approved by an academic staff member in advance of registration.)

Module Content:
This module offers students an opportunity to complete a focussed piece of legal or law-related research or other academic work in conjunction with or on behalf of a member of academic staff. This may include, for instance, a research paper for a public body, non-governmental organisation, charity or non-profit, research support to an academic staff member, completion of a submission for a public consultation or similar exercise, or data collection and analysis under the direction of an academic staff member. In all cases, an academic staff member will supervise the work.

Orientation will include project management, time management, engagement with stakeholders and a refresher on legal research methods.

Any aspect of this module may be changed in any given academic year, subject to the discretion of the module lecturer.
