This module aims to critically examine one of most contested concepts in contemporary discourse, terrorism. In addition to discussing terrorism and its history in Ireland, it will explore the nature and dimensions of the ‘new’ international terrorist threat. It will also critically discuss the contemporary range of counter-terrorist responses, agencies and policies in both the national and international context, with a particular emphasis on ‘special’ or exceptional courts and military commissions.
