Overview Overview

The primary aim of LC101 is to provide a solid basis in the Irish language for beginners, through developing comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills at a basic level. Classtime will be focused on building a good basic vocabulary, introducing grammatical concepts and focus on pronunciation. Irish language culture and heritage is an integral part of the course and various topics will be presented in lectures by School of Celtic Studies staff.

This class will follow TEG Bonnleibhéal 1 (A1) syllabus closely. TEG (Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge, www.teg.ie) is an examination system for adult learners of Irish that is linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe, 2001). A1 level is intended for complete beginners.

At the end of LC101, students should be able to communicate basic information about themselves through the medium of Irish. LC102, in Semester 2, builds on the outcomes achieved in LC101.

Students who wish to take LC102 must achieve an overall mark of at least 50% in the LC101 examinations.
