	Overview
	The primary aim of LC101 is to provide a solid basis in the Irish language for beginners, through developing comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills at a basic level. Classtime will be focused on building a basic vocabulary, introducing grammatical concepts and focus on pronunciation. Irish language culture will also be an integral part of the course. This class will follow TEG Bonnleibhéal 1 (A1) syllabus closely. TEG (Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge, www.teg.ie) is an examination system for adult learners of Irish that is linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe, 2001). A1 level is intended for complete beginners. At the end of LC101, students should be able to communicate basic information about themselves through the medium of Irish. LC102, in Semester 2, builds on the outcomes achieved in LC101. Students who wish to take LC102 must achieve an overall mark of at least 50% in the LC101 examinations.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: use single words and simple sentences while taking part in a conversation based on topics and general information that relate to everyday life. understand simple speech delivered in a slow, carefully articulated but natural manner. understand texts that are short and simple insofar as they relate specifically to everyday life. understand texts on a phrase-by phrase basis, finding words and recognisable phrases. write simple words and very simple basic phrases. understand some principal aspects of Irish culture, particularly those aspects relating to Irish and the Gaeltacht (Irish speaking areas).
