The primary aim of LC101 is to provide a solid basis in the Irish language for students, through developing skills of understanding, speaking, reading and writing Irish at a basic level. Classtime will be focused on building a basic vocabulary, introducing grammatical concepts and focus on pronunciation. Irish language culture will also be an integral part of the course. LC102 will develop these skills further in Semester 2. This class will follow TEG Bonnleibhéal 1 (A1) syllabus closely. TEG (Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge, www.teg.ie) is an examination system for adult learners of Irish that is linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe, 2001). A1 level is intended for complete beginners. At the end of LC101, the student should be able to communicate basic information about him/herself, through the medium of Irish. LC102 builds on the outcomes achieved in LC101. Students who wish to take LC102 must achieve an overall mark of at least 50% in the LC101 examinations.
