This module looks at local and transnational social movements and activism within the context of globalisation and international development.
It explores such questions as:
What does it mean to be 'globally active' for Development?
How has globalisation affected development activism and social movements?
Is it enough to be 'active' and what does it mean to be 'radical'?
Activism and Identity – What is the influence of feminism on global activism for development?
“What are we fighting for? Rights or Justice or anti-globalisation?
What kind of normative frameworks for activism are out there?
What are the different activism strategies for development and change?
Who is Active - What's the difference between NGOs, Grassroots Organisations, Networks and Movements?
The module will also examine a number of case studies of Global Activist Movements, including environmental rights movements, the climate justice movement; indigenous rights movements, gay rights, Occupy movement, trade justice).
