Students will explore why gender is important to consider as part of development practice and the challenges of pursuing gender transformation within the prevailing development paradigm.
Gender and Development focuses on men and women as socially constructed subjects, the attendant inequalities and exclusions which are produced, and the ways in which these can be challenged through development policy and practice.
This module will introduce students to gender concepts and terminologies and how gender is shaped by socialisation and cultural context.
Students will explore why gender is important to consider as part of development practice and the challenges of pursuing gender transformation within the prevailing development paradigm.
This module will also introduce students to a range of tools and methods that have been developed to assist with gender-sensitive project planning.
This module is taught in a participatory manner and will introduce students to gender analysis tools.
