At the end of this module, students will have:
Insight into the function of different state institutions and understanding of their roles;
An appreciation of the institutional capacities, and political and economic agendas of different types of states;
The implications of state welfare and the consequences of integrated global social policies and welfare systems;
An understanding of the influence of political ideology on humanitarian and development action.;
An awareness of the role and function of non-governmental organisations and other civil society organisations in development practice;
Knowledge of the impact of globalisation on historical and contemporary development practices;
The capacity to critically reflect on and analyse the concepts of the state, civil society organisations and transnational actors in development practice.
