• Understand the concept of ethics and development ethics in particular, They will understand the process of moral reasoning and various theories of distributive justice.
• Reflect on the moral reasoning behind the decisions and actions people take, and consider whether people in the Global North have an ethical duty to redistribute wealth with those in the Global South.
• Discuss some of the successes and failures of ‘development’ and argue for ways in which more ethical forms of development could be conducted.
• Formulate arguments on current ethical issues within the development arena, issues that are pertinent to students, for example, the ethics of volunteering abroad and volunteer tourism.
• Apply their learning to their own lives, to see if ethical principles can guide their own conduct – both personal and professional – especially if working in future in the field of development.
• Overall, students should have critically reflective and well-balanced attitudes, and well-informed perspectives on the ethics of development.

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): Lecture & Tutorial Participation: 10%, Short assignments: 30% Assessment is by Continuous assessment and final examination. Continuous assessment consists of a short written assignment mid-way through the module (30%) Then in view of group work and participatory approaches employed in this module, students can earn 5% (for their participation in a minimum of 75% of all lecture sessions), and a further 5% for their participation at tutorials. (40%)

• Repeat students must sit the repeat exam in Autumn and submit their continuous assessment by a date before the Autumn examination, which will be specified by the department. Students are responsible for familiarising themselves with this deadline. If students do not submit by the deadline, the existing continuous assessment mark will be carried forward to the Autumn. No continuous assessment work will be accepted after this date. The maximum mark awarded to a piece of continuous assessment submitted for the Autumn repeat examinations is 50%. This will apply except upon presentation of a medical certificate covering the relevant period or in other extremely extenuating circumstances, which must be communicated to, and accepted by, the lecturer prior to, or immediately after, the relevant deadline.
