This module aims to provide students with an understanding of some key economic and political explanations for the differences in economic prosperity that exist between and within countries of the world today. It will look at contemporary explanations of these differences and differential regional and national progress in this regard. The module will then focus on a series of related issues including wellbeing and inequality, global governance, aid and trade, global population dynamics, environmental challenges of the current growth model, exploring the current theories and policies around these issues and the roles they play in the development process.

On successful completion of the module, students should have gained:
An understanding of current concepts and measures of development, of the roles of main global governance institutions (UN, WTO, IMF & World Bank).
A critical insight into current aid modalities and their effectiveness in promoting economic, political and social change.
An appreciation of the wider environmental, political and economic implications of rapid economic progress and population dynamics globally.
Students will have developed through the module assessment and tutorials their data collection, writing and presentational skills.
