This is a foundation course in Irish Cultural Heritage Studies. While introducing students to a general understanding of early cultural history, the emphasis is on the importance of academic knowledge of the past as a foundation for the presentation and dissemination of cultural heritage for the general public. This is an assessment of the diverse aspects of Irish cultural history including place names, the literature of places and the creation and manipulation of history in relation to some of the great prehistoric and early medieval locations in Ireland. The care, presentation and future development of heritage sites such as the Hill of Tara, Newgrange, Kells, Glendalough and Clonmacnoise will be assessed in the context of modern scholarly interpretation and the increasing importance of cultural tourism.

Note 1: Students taking the Certificate in Irish Cultural Heritage in Semester 1, must take ID001 or ID014 as the core module.
Note 2: This module will also be available in Semester 2, under the code, ID001X Introducing Irish Cultural Heritage.
