It aims to help the student archivist to acquire an understanding of rare and unique collections and how to deal with them in the context of an archive collection. Its ultimate goal is to provide students with the understanding necessary to assess printed items as part of archival collections, and provide access to them.

This module is about book collections in archives. It aims to help the student archivist to acquire an understanding of rare and unique collections and how to deal with them in the context of an archive collection. Its ultimate goal is to provide students with the understanding necessary to assess printed items as part of archival collections, and provide access to them.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Understand the key stages in the tradition of print in Ireland. LO1 (knowledge) Differentiate between the different types of catalogues (traditional and electronic formats) and recognize how the cataloguer makes easy/improved/varied access happen. LO2 (knowledge) Be able to recognise different print formats and make a basic assessment of print items which typically feature in the holdings of archives. LO3 (skills) Create a bibliographic record to a level appropriate to that item and to the repository in which it is held. LO4 (skills) Appreciate the importance of printed items in archival collections and apply the principles and methodologies learned. LO5 (competences) Be cognoscent of the ways by which access to printed items can be opened to the widest possible user group. LO6 (competences)
