• Understand the political, economic, social and cultural impact of the First World War
• Identify the historical conditions that led to the appearance of Fascism in Europe
• Identify and analyse key primary and secondary sources leading to the production of a mid-length assignment on an approved topic
• Assume responsibility for self and group learning through the delivery of an oral presentation

• 36 contact hours or equivalent (lectures, seminars, field trips, etc.)

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): Total Marks 100%. 7,500 word essay or shorter essay combined with class assignments/tests; Essay to be submitted by Monday prior to commencement of end-of-semester examinations.

• Penalties: No late material accepted unless medical or other compelling reasons are established in writing. The expectation is for full attendance by students. Explanation in writing is required in every case of absence. The project/essay of a candidate who has missed more than 50% of classes will not be eligible for assessment under any circumstances. At the discretion of the lecturer, an individual module may have additional specifications in this regard, which will be indicated in advance of registration.

• For autumn or external repeat, students must have fulfilled the departmental attendance requirements and must have departmental approval. The essay/project component only may be submitted. There will be no repeat of other continuous assessment components. Marks received during the semester in respect of in-class tests, presentations etc., will be carried over. Essays/projects for autumn repeat must be submitted by 1 August and may be capped at 40%.
