This module will provide an overview of nineteenth and twentieth century Irish emigration to North America and Australia. The social, economic and cultural context of this emigration will be the starting point of the lectures. The theme of voluntary versus involuntary emigration will be introduced through an analysis of convict emigration, landlord assisted emigration, and famine emigration. The assisted emigration of children and juveniles to Canada and the Earl Grey Orphan assisted emigration to Australia will also be analysed. Finally, the over-representation of women in post famine Irish emigration will be documented.
