The impact of America on nineteenth century Ireland had tangible repercussions on political, social and economic life. It can also be argued that America held a significant place in the Irish Imagination. This theme of America in Ireland will form the first component of the course. The differing motivations behind male and female emigration throughout the nineteenth century will form the second component of this course. The final aspect of this course will be the involuntary emigration of young children from Ireland and Britain to Canada in the late nineteenth century.
