Module code: GY627
Credits: 10
Semester: 2
Department: GEOGRAPHY
International: No
Coordinator: Prof. Karen Till (GEOGRAPHY)
Overview Overview

This module will introduce students to core theories, approaches, debates and practices in Art and Geography by introducing such key spatial concepts as place, landscape, mappings and scale through a systematic review of interdisciplinary theoretical debates. Students will be introduced to conceptual and analytical spatial thinking skills to think critically and systematically about the cultural and political dimensions of what it means to ‘map’, represent and engage with places, communities, and landscapes in the past and present relevant to Ireland and elsewhere.
Topics to be discussed include:
1. Place-based practice vs. site-specific art;
2. Socially- and ecologically-engaged creative practice;
3. Communities, knowledge networks, publics and commons;
4. Public space, rights to liveable environments and social sustainability;
5. Memory-work, traces and practices of care; and
6. Spatial justice.
