Module GLOBALISATION AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS

Module code: GY622
Credits: 10
Semester: 1
Department: GEOGRAPHY
International: No
Overview Overview

This module will explore the multiple roles that global social movements play in attempts to resist and transform globalisation. It will focus on movements remaking globalisation ‘from below’ stemming from both the Global North and South. The module focuses on the politics and processes of globalisation and social movements. In particular, it highlights the way in which globalisation has produced unjust geographies that are manifest in both underdeveloped and developed world contexts with a particular focus on the role of government and corporations and the inequitable distribution of resources and services. It also highlights the role of contemporary social movements in highlighting, challenging and developing spatial justice in relation to community rights, workers rights, gender and indigenous rights. The module pays particular attention to global and local issues of development, spatial injustice, inequality and human rights, in both the Global South and the Global North.
