The module’s objective is to introduce students to the current global financial, economic and political crisis, to the particular forms that it has taken in Ireland compared to other countries (in Europe and North America), and to its unfolding impacts on the economic, socio-cultural and political geographies of Ireland. It will discuss various theoretical approaches to understanding the causes of the crisis with particular reference to the role of neoliberalism. The course will provide a critical understanding of the diverse strategies states have adopted to respond to the crisis such as austerity and the varying civil society social movement reactions.
