• Develop an appreciation of the importance of a number of geographical concepts in understandings of the Irish past.
• Evaluate, both theoretically and empirically, the use of these concepts in modern efforts to make Ireland’s past relevant to the concerns of Ireland present.
• Develop the capacity to use some of these concepts to explore elements of Irish culture, past or present.

• Each week, there will be two lectures, the first of which will focus in particular upon the concept for the week, and the second will explore ways that the concept has been, and may be, used to understand the historical geography of Ireland. Particular attention will be paid to cultural aspects of the ways that Ireland’s past is addressed by modern people concerned with Ireland’s identity and direction.

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): The final examination will consist of two essays that students will write in a one-and-a-half hour exam. They will choose these two from a selection of four questions offered for their consideration. This examination will contribute 66.67% of the final grade. The other third will be derived from submitted exercises and a midterm in-class examination. There will be three exercises each worth 11 points, making a total of 33. The midterm examination will consist of three questions each worth 11 points. Your final mark will be your mark out of 66.67 for the final examination plus the best three elements from the other six elements [ie the 3 submitted pieces and the 3 midterm questions]. The evaluation of students will focus upon: their understanding of the central concepts; their ability to illustrate how they have been used to understand the Irish past; their capacity for evaluating both empirically and theoretically these concepts; and, finally, their understanding of the contestable uses of Irish history in discussions of Ireland’s current position.
