Module code: GST2
Credits: 5
Semester: Year-Long
Department: GRADUATE SKILLS
International: No
Overview Overview

The Graduate School, in partnership with MU Library, offers the graduate skills module GST2: Finding Information for your Research to support research students in developing and enhancing their research skills and awareness over the course of their research degree. GST2 is primarily facilitated by MU Research Support Librarian Ciarán Quinn and is comprised of the following mandatory sessions:

1) Reflective Writing & Appraisal of Skills – Dr Adeline Cooney, Centre for Teaching & Learning
This initial workshop will provide research students with the opportunity to develop their reflective writing skills and the ability to appraise their own competency profile. Research students will learn what reflective writing is, the value of reflective writing, how to write reflectively, models for structuring reflective writing, and how to address global reflection with an emphasis on self-appraisal of skill and abilities. Students will also have the opportunity to practice reflective writing and engage in an in-class review and peer feedback.

2) Finding Information for your Research
The aim of this workshop is to familiarise research students with the complete process of planning, searching, finding, evaluating and storing material for their research.

3) Reference Management Software & Avoiding Plagiarism
In this workshop, research students will learn how to use the different referencing tools available (EndNote, Mendeley, Zotero, etc.), how to create bibliographies and in-text citations, and how to store research results online in order to ensure accurate referencing and avoid plagiarism.

4) Doing Literature Reviews: What You Need To Know
The objective of this workshop is to provide research students with an understanding of what a literature review is, the process involved in conducting a literature review and possible challenges research students are likely to encounter when conducting a literature review.

5) Research Data Management
The focus of this workshop is to facilitate research students in understanding the full cycle of research data management, why it is necessary and the issues involved with making research data available to the broader research community. Research students will also learn how to access the tools necessary to put together a Data Management plan.

6) Publishing in Academic Journals: Finding the Right Journal for your Research
In this workshop, research students will learn how to identify the best place to publish their research. The workshop will focus on how to plan your publishing strategy in advance to maximise the impact of your research article, as well as the use of available databases to identify the best journal title to publish your research.

7) Measuring and Improving your Research Impact using Bibliometrics
This workshop will look at the bibliometric analysis tools available to measure research impact by citation analysis. Research students will learn how to measure the impact of journal articles, journal titles, individual researchers, groups of researchers and institutions, as well as how to improve their own research impact, their online researcher profile and identify potential opportunities for research collaborations.

Research students must speak to their supervisor before registering for this module. Students can register via their Student Web Portal or by emailing rsdp@mu.ie.
