This module begins with an overview of some of the basic concepts informing Applied Linguistics and Psycholinguistics, namely linguistic theories such as Structuralism, Generative Grammar, Speech Act Theory, Discourse Analysis, et al., and psychological theories such as behaviourism, cognitivism, et al. In the second part of the module the focus will be on analysing the dominant methodologies of teaching/learning foreign languages, e.g. Grammar-Translation Method, Direct Method, Audiovisual Method, Audiolingual Method, Communicative Approach, Intercultural Approach and Alternative Methodologies, and exploring salient issues of language learning strategies and learner autonomy before introducing students to procedures for planning and delivering foreign language classes.
