Twenty-first Century German-language Narratives of Migration and Belonging
This module brings together film and literature to explore different aspects of migration, from the German experience of expulsion at the end of World War II, to the fate of “guest workers” and asylum seekers in unified Germany, and the contemporary refugee crisis. Investigating the short- and longer-term effects of (forced) migration on individuals, their families, and Germany as a country of arrival, this module analyses what it means to be in- and out-of-place. It outlines the effects of migration and anti-migrant violence on concepts of identity and belonging.
