	Overview
	‘Denn zu Zeiten der Not bedarf man seiner Verwandten’ (J.W. von Goethe): The family in German literature 1880-1920 The course looks at transformations in the nature and function of the family as presented in key German literary texts during a period of radical upheaval whether viewed in social, political, economic or other terms. The course will deal with some texts in full and others on the basis of selected extracts: Course Texts: A. Holz/J. Schlaf, Die Familie Selicke (1890) (Extracts) G. Hauptmann, Vor Sonnenaufgang (1889) (Extracts) A. Schnitzler,Reigen (1900) (Full text) F. Kafka, Die Verwandlung (1912) (Full text) **This 5-ECTS credit module may be used as part of the 15-ECTS credits in the study of literature (including drama, poetry, fiction, film studies etc.) required for accreditation by the Teaching Council of Ireland. All applications submitted for Teaching Council accreditation are, however, subject to the Teaching Council’s internal evaluation processes.

‘Denn zu Zeiten der Not bedarf man seiner Verwandten’ (J.W. von Goethe): The family in German literature 1880-1920

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Identify and explain key aspects of historical, societal and cultural development in the German-speaking countries during the period in question. Summarise in broad terms developments in the literature of this era, and analyse closely designated key texts. Interpret literary works through close reading and contextualisation. Evaluate critically secondary literature. Research, develop and articulate in writing a balanced and well-structured argument.

Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).
Penalties: Late submission of assessed course work or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5% (5 marks) per day. Assessed course work or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the relevant submission deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes Continuous Assessment marks are carried forward to the Autumn. Contact course Coordinator early in July for repeat course essay topics.

	Pre-Requisites
	Since this module involves reading of the German language, a good knowledge of German is required.
