‘Denn zu Zeiten der Not bedarf man seiner Verwandten’ (J.W. von Goethe): The family in German literature 1880-1920
The course looks at transformations in the nature and function of the family as presented in key German literary texts during a period of radical upheaval whether viewed in social, political, economic or other terms. The course will deal with some texts in full and others on the basis of selected extracts:

A. Schnitzler,Reigen (1900) (Full text)
F. Kafka, Die Verwandlung (1912) (Full text)

**This 5-ECTS credit module may be used as part of the 15-ECTS credits in the study of literature (including drama, poetry, fiction, film studies etc.) required for accreditation by the Teaching Council of Ireland. All applications submitted for Teaching Council accreditation are, however, subject to the Teaching Council’s internal evaluation processes.
