The primary goals of this course are
• to familiarize students with the key topics, debates and texts that have shaped the field of Gender and Sexuality Studies and
• to encourage them to ask critical questions about the interrelationships between gender, sexuality and power in society and culture.

The units and modules that make up the elective stream offer insight into gender-related debates in a wide variety of spheres, such as law, education, history, literature, film, music, and the media.
Through lectures and in-class discussion of texts from literature, film, history, psychology, and sociology, we will examine the pervasive influence of gender on the structure of society and our everyday experiences.

This module will be made up of five interconnected units as follows:
Unit 1: Gender Identity and Law: Transgender and Intersex
Unit 2: Contemporary Constructions of Motherhood
Unit 3: Gender and Opera
Unit 4: Masculinity, Same-sex Passion and Narrative
Unit 3: Recent history of reproductive justice activism in Ireland
