	Overview
	The aim of this module is to prepare students for the Year Abroad linguistically and interculturally, and to assist them in identifying their own learning strategies in academic, linguistic, cultural, pragmatic and personal terms. Students will engage with concepts such as 'culture', 'interculturality' and 'intercultural communicative competence', while also being introduced to a corpus of scholarly research on living and working abroad within a year abroad context. Additionally, students will be exposed to the lived experiences from final year students who have recently returned in order to benefit from fellow students' lived experiences. This module will, therefore, provide students with relevant tools for dealing with practical matters upon arrival as well as assisting them to generate a critical awareness of the key learning experiences of the period abroad, thus encouraging them to develop sound intercultural communicative competence and to document the personal, academic and other benefits of their year abroad. This module is strongly recommended for students who are interested in spending the third year of their studies in a German-speaking country.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Investigate and gather information on practical matters before and during the year abroad e.g. application procedures, information mining, registering residency, setting up bank accounts etc. Identify academic, linguistic, cultural, professional and personal Year Abroad goals and develop strategies for reaching such goals Summarise the scholarly work on the Year Abroad and explain how it applies to students' own learning Define concepts such as 'culture', 'interculturality' and 'intercultural communicative competence' and clarify their relevance to the Year Abroad Research, structure and develop a balanced argument in writing.

Continuous Assessment detail(s): Two reflective journal entries (30%) and course essay (70%). Details of Continuous Assessment will be advertised in the course of the semester.

Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).
Penalties: Late submission of assessed course work or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5% (5 marks) per day. Assessed course work or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the relevant submission deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).

	Pre-Requisites
	Since this module involves aspects of the German language, which will also be tested in the Continuous Assessment and/or exam, an intermediate knowledge of German is a prerequisite.
