Module CROSSING BOUNDARIES - PREPARING FOR THE YEAR ABROAD

Module code: GN222A
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: GERMAN
International: No
Coordinator: Dr Clive Earls (GERMAN)
Overview Overview

The aim of this module is to prepare students for the Year Abroad linguistically and interculturally, and to assist them in identifying their own learning strategies in academic, linguistic, cultural, pragmatic and personal terms. Students will engage with concepts such as 'culture', 'interculturality' and 'intercultural communicative competence', while also being introduced to a corpus of scholarly research on living and working abroad within a year abroad context. Additionally, students will be exposed to the lived experiences from final year students who have recently returned in order to benefit from fellow students' lived experiences. This module will, therefore, provide students with relevant tools for dealing with practical matters upon arrival as well as assisting them to generate a critical awareness of the key learning experiences of the period abroad, thus encouraging them to develop sound intercultural communicative competence and to document the personal, academic and other benefits of their year abroad.
This module is strongly recommended for students who are interested in spending the third year of their studies in a German-speaking country.
