	Overview
	(Re-)Negotiating East-Germanness This module introduces students to the historical period of the GDR and the economic, social, and cultural processes of German Reunification to the present. Particular attention will be given to German and East-German identity constructs, i.e. who/what is considered German by whom, and what does it mean to be East German in this context? Overview

(Re-)Negotiating East-Germanness

This module introduces students to the historical period of the GDR and the economic, social, and cultural processes of German Reunification to the present. 	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Identify and explain key aspects of historical, societal and cultural development in Germany during the period in question. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the main issues regarding German Reunification and (East-)German identity constructs. Summarise in broad terms developments in the literature of this era, and analyse closely designated key texts. Interpret texts through close reading and contextualisation. Evaluate critically secondary literature. Research, develop and articulate in writing a balanced and well-structured arguments.

Could the result of this module be capped? If the attendance requirement is not met.
Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).
Penalties: Late submission of assessed course work or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5% (5 marks) per day. Assessed course work or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the relevant submission deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes Continuous Assessment marks are carried forward to the Autumn. Contact course Coordinator early in July for repeat course essay topics.

	Pre-Requisites
	Since this module involves aspects of the German language, which will also be tested in the Continuous Assessment and course essay, an intermediate knowledge of German is a prerequisite.
