This module aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of German language structures by initially familiarising students with the terminology and the concepts of a grammatical meta-language. On this basis, students will analyse aspects of German and English grammar by adopting a comparative-contrastive approach, including translation, to examine structural and semantic differences and parallels between the two languages. Students will discuss these differences between German and English and practise elements of the German language and its use that are markedly different from English, such as gendered linguistic items, articles, endings, word order, idiomatic language use, particles, compound nouns etc. The emphasis of this module is not so much on language practice but on language analysis, thus improving students’ awareness of the structure and the functions of grammar, morpho-syntax and pragmatics.
